Ruth, Director of Culture.A whirlwind day – we announce that I am Director of the Cultural Olympiad – literally in a whirlwind of snow, with a photo shoot of me in the pouring snow – and I get deluged by wonderful messages and texts of welcome and congratulations.

The best job in the UK, and whilst people often talk about 'a once in a lifetime opportunity', it seems unlikely that I will ever get the chance again to work on such an enormous and exciting project.
I can't wait to start – and I am only waiting until February – and then I hope I can start listening to and learning from all my new colleagues in LOCOG, all the supporters round the UK who have already signed up to be the best friends, supporters and participants in the cultural events that we are planning.

Giving students the chance to get a place on the Press Operations team at Games-time

I am so proud that LOCOG has worked with Sheffield Hallam University to insert an Olympic-related module into each of three well-respected undergraduate courses from January 2010.

This means that students will get the opportunity to learn about the Olympics and, more importantly, understand what goes into organising the facilities and services for 5,600 journalists and photographers at the Games.

Those students who make the grade will be offered an opportunity to be part of the almost 3,000-strong Press Operations team at the Olympic and Paralympic Games!

This is the first time that modules have been integrated into an academic course, certainly from over two years out before the Games. LOCOG and Sheffield Hallam have worked together to provide courses of practical value to students.

They will learn what press operations is all about, and have the opportunity to work on one of the many test events we will be staging in the run up to 2012. In addition, some International Sports Federations have expressed interest in providing guest lecturers and offering certain students the opportunity to work at their international events.

I have been involved with press operations – at national and international level – for over 23 years and have had the privilege of working on five Olympic Games.

As a student at Bristol University in the early 1980s I yearned to work in the international sports arena. The best experience I gained was from serving as the Athletic Union President – juggling a schedule of limited minibuses and an over stretched budget for more than 25 sports clubs was a challenge. Using this experience, my modern languages degree and enthusiasm as sportswoman and coach, I managed to get a junior position at the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and the rest is history.

I have been lucky enough to meet many sports stars and heroes along the way.

However, this is not why I have stayed in this challenging profession. The thing that has motivated me the most and given me the most pleasure is working with volunteers and seeing people and careers develop through working on incredible events.

Potentially up to 350 students could find themselves with a chance to work on London 2012. They will be along side event professionals and people who will give freely of their time and extensive experience – perhaps from other fields in life.

It will be intense, exhausting, dramatic and incredibly rewarding. Not for the faint hearted. And the exciting truth is that London 2012 has no chance of success without the contribution of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic workforce.

London 2012 Organising Committee Chairman Sebastian Coe said:

'The Aquatics Centre is going to be a spectacular venue for the Games in 2012 and its unique roof will be a wonderful addition to the east London skyline. At Games-time, 17,500 excited spectators will be able to ‘raise the roof’ cheering on the swimmers, including our British medal hopefuls, and in legacy it will become a much-needed elite and community facility. We are making great progress – and are fully on track with this iconic gateway to the Olympic Park.'

These include facilities management, catering, production services for Ceremonies and technology.

Seb said: ‘The focus so far has been on the ODA and construction, but the Organising Committee is now at a stage where we move from planning to delivery.

‘With less than three years to go, we’re starting the procurement process for everything we need to stage a memorable Games. The scope of this is potentially massive - from sporting equipment to catering services and beyond.

‘We often talk about the Games heralding a golden decade of sport and I believe that this could be matched by a golden decade of sport-related business. We want the Games to be a triumph for Britain – at the finish line and the bottom line.’

Local school meets team building London 2012 Velodrome. The contractors designing and building the London 2012 Velodrome visited the winners of the London 2012 'VeloDream' competition. Curwen Primary School in Newham won last year's 'VeloDream' by beating more than 500 schools who signed up for the competition around the country. The competition asked pupils to design their own dream cycling venues of the future.

A full day of activity at the school included a presentation on the London 2012 Velodrome, followed by a chance for the pupils to design and build a 3.5m x 2.5m model of the VeloPark. Six groups each worked with a member of the contractor team to create a section of the VeloPark. At the end of the day, all the sections were put together to make the entire VeloPark, including the Velodrome and BMX Circuit.

Ms Helm from Curwen Primary School said: 'Working with the Olympic Delivery Authority and Velodrome designers has been an amazing opportunity for our children and allowed them to experience working as a team on a larger project. The final outcome was incredible and a testament to everybody's hard work and creativity. As a school we are very excited about developing our own “Olympic legacy” through this Velodrome work.'

Her Majesty The Queen today visited the Olympic Park to see the progress being made on the venues and infrastructure being built for the London 2012 Games. Her Majesty also helped plant the first tree on the Park. The 17-year-old English white willow, planted close to the Olympic Stadium, is the first of more than 4,000 trees that will be planted in the parklands across the 2.5sq km site.



A total of 300 trees will be located on the Stadium ‘island’, half of which will be planted by the end of 2009. After viewing the Stadium from a platform at the level of the highest spectators’ seats, Her Majesty then walked along a section of the 100m track and across what will become the finish line.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chairman John Armitt said: ‘It is an honour to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to the Olympic Park site today and show her the progress that is being made across the site. We now have around 7,000 people working to create the venues that are already landmarks on the east London skyline and thousands of British companies working on one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe.’

London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Chair Sebastian Coe said: ‘We are thrilled to welcome Her Majesty back to show the progress we’ve made. The skyline in this part of London is being changed forever. The Olympic Park will become a home to world-class sport in 2012 and a new community afterwards. The Queen is planting the first tree, a symbolic gesture that represents the most extraordinary effort by everyone to ensure the Games bring lasting change for millions of people across London and the country as a whole.’

Paralympic Games north south transport link

An important nor,h-south transport link that will be ,used by thousands of spectators during the London ,2012 Olympic and ,Paralympic Games ,has opened ahead of ,schedule today.The ,lympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is investing ,around £80m in enhancements,, including new rail cars, across the D,LR network in time for the ,London 2012 Games.

Part of this, funding will also go towards fitting out ,Blackwall and East India stations to accommodate the longer three-car trains that w,ill eventually run from

the City to ,Woolwich Arsenal. During the Games, this will help spectators in Woolwich and ,the south east get to the Olympic Park ,and other venues, such as ExCeL, to the north of the ,river. The extension was funded a,s part of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) £10bn ,Investment Programme.
Passengers are,ow using the Docklands Ligh,t Railway’s (DLR’s) 2.5km extension, from King George V north ,of the River Thames to Woolwich ,Arsenal in the south. Public invited to design 50p coins to celebrate the Games

The Britis,h public is being invited to design 50 pence coins to ,commemorate the London 2012 Oly,mpic and Par,alympic Games. They will fe,ature on the ,back of millions of ,50 pen,ce pieces from March 2010. The winners, will also receive £1,000 cash and a gold c,oin featuring their own design., Launching t,he competition, with a giant coin in Traf,algar Square this morning, Olympic ,gold medallist Jonathan Edw,ards said: ‘This is an amazin,g opportunity for the whole natio,n to be a part of Lo,ndon 2012 in a lasting, ,memorable way.’

The competition, being run by the Royal Mint, is o,pen all UK residents over the age of 13. A ,total of 29 designs will be chosen, depicting each of the sports at the Olympic and Paralympic Games,.. London 2012 partner BT has signed a four year sponsorship to back the Paralympic World Cup - the largest annual international multi-sport competition in the elite disability calendar. Pictures Shows Olimpic Park London

New images have ,been released today ,showing the transformation of the Olimpic Park at the halfway point between ,London winning the bid for the, 2012 Games in July 2005 and the, Opening Ceremony of the Olimpic Games on 27 July 2012. The before and after pictures show the dramatic progress ,that has been made, on the Olimpic Park. The majority of the site has already been cleared and cleaned, and the pylons that, dominated the landscape have been, removed. Power has been, transferred to two new, 6km tunnels that have been dug, under the Park. Construction, started early on ,the Olimpic Stadium and Aquatics Centre, and work

is also under way ,on the Olimpic Village. In November 2008, work finished on the Sailing facilities, at Weymouth and Portland, – the first London 2012 ,venue to be completed.
